Toshiba Portégé Z10t detachable Ultrabook launched

by Robert Mullins

Toshiba has officially introduced the Portégé Z10t, the company's first detachable Ultrabook. Having previously shown off the device at Intel's IDF conference in Beijing, the company has now revealed final specifications for the hybrid laptop.

Built around an 11.6in, Full HD touchscreen display, the Z10t is a somewhat chunky 20mm thick, but contains an Intel Core processor, fast solid state disk (SSD) storage and the full version of Windows 8 Pro - which means you'll be able to run all your desktop applications, unlike the cut-down Windows RT.

With a single USB3 port, micro HDMI, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm combination audio jack, the Z10t has a reasonable number of wired connections, along with 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional Intel Wi-Di wireless display support. There will also be a 4G-ready LTE model for always-connected computing.

The bundled keyboard dock has a full-size, spill-resistant keyboard, for when you need to get some work done and a touch screen would just slow you down. It uses backlit keys, so you should be able to keep working in the dark, and includes a traditional laptop touchpad. It also has a single USB port, HDMI and RGB video outputs and a Gigabit LAN port, meaning you don't miss out on connectivity. The docking mechanism itself looks huge and rather industrial, with a quick-release button to detach the screen when you want to use it as a tablet.

Toshiba seems to be trying to capitalise on growing demand for business-ready tablets, by including Intel's Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and vPro technologies to keep saved data secure, letting IT departments remotely maintain the Z10t, as well as Anti-Theft to prevent unauthorised access.

The Portégé Z10t will be available in the UK from the summer onwards, although Toshiba has yet to confirm final pricing - we'll be taking a closer look at the device in the coming weeks, where we'll hopefully learn how much you'll have to pay for the privilege of owning one.
