Sony Xperia 2 release date: Sony sends invites to MWC launch event

by Robert Mullins

The Sony Xperia 2 leaks are beginning to pick up speed. After relaunching its flagship range last year with the Xperia 1, Sony is no doubt keen to carry its own momentum forwards, cornering the market on unusual aspect ratios and high-res displays as it goes.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide to the latest Xperia 2 leaks, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about the Sony Xperia 2.

Sony Xperia 2: Everything we know so far

Sony Xperia 2 release date: When will it launch?

Sony has invited press to an MWC briefing on 24 February. This is without a shadow of a doubt where we will see the Xperia 2 (or equivalent) for the first time; we're certain of this because the Xperia 1 was announced at MWC 2019.

The Xperia 1 didn’t actually go on sale until June 2019, so by the same logic, mark your calendars for a June 2020 release date.

Sony Xperia 2 price: How much will it cost?

A lot. The Xperia 1 cost £849 at launch, so don’t expect to fork out anything less than that; with the rumours that are currently circulating, you might even end up paying more.

The only leak on the subject claims that the Xperia 2 will cost roughly £670, which rather ruins our predictions – that said, a leak is a leak, and must be taken with a healthy dose of salt.

Sony Xperia 2 features and specs: The latest rumours

Snapdragon 865

One of the few rumours currently doing the rounds is that the Xperia 2 will launch with the Snapdragon 865 onboard . This is hardly surprising stuff – the 865 is the latest flagship processor from Qualcomm – but it does raise the question of 5G compatibility.

If this leak is accurate, Sony will be one of the first to sell a handset running the new processor.

4K display

Sony is very proud of its unusual displays, and the Xperia 2 will stand as proof of this. The rumour is that the new handset will have a 4K display , like its predecessor; this display may apparently be 6.6in in size, with the same 21:9 aspect ratio as the Xperia 1.

Plenty of RAM

Another leak claims that the Xperia 2 will have 12GB of RAM . This might sound like a lot, but it’s becoming par for the course with modern flagships – the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition attempted to popularise the trend early last year.

Hole-punch selfie camera

Rumours have surfaced that the Xperia 2 will have a hole-punch front camera – thereby removing the need for a hefty bezel. This is far and away the least likely to be accurate; after all, Sony’s entire Xperia 1 marketing campaign was predicated on the fact that the phone DIDN’T have an intrusive selfie camera.

We will continue to update this page with new rumours as they surface. Don’t go anywhere.
