A Brief Introduction to Excavator

by Robert Mullins

There are many types of excavators. We can divide it in many ways. Their uses and working methods are different.

We can divide it into periodic operation (single bucket) and continuous operation type (multiple buckets). This is according to the operation process. We can divide it into general (building type or universal type) and special type (mine, tunnel operation, etc.). This is according to the purpose. We can divide it into combustion engine (diesel engine), hybrid and electric type. This is according to the power division. We can divide it into mechanical transmission, hydraulic transmission and hybrid type. This is on the basis of the power transmission mode. At present, excavators are hydraulic excavators. We can divide it into crawler and tire excavators. This is according to the division of walking devices. We can divide it into front shovel, backhoe, pull shovel, grab shovel and hoisting. This is according to different working methods. There are large (over 30 tons), medium (10-30 tons) and small excavators (less than 10 tons). This is according to the different mass sizes.

We can divide it into internal combustion engine-driven and electric power-driven. This is according to their driving modes. Electric excavators are suitable for plateau anoxia, underground mines. It is suitable for other inflammable and explosive places.

The most common excavator is backhoe excavator. We can apply it to excavation operations below the stop face. The operation methods include: trench end and trench side excavation, straight line excavation. This includes curve excavation, excavation with a certain angle. It includes ultra-deep trench and trench slope excavation, etc.

The front shovel excavator has forced soil cutting. The front shovel has great digging force. It can dig up the soil above the stop surface. It is suitable for digging dry foundation pits. This is with a height of more than 2 m. But we must set up and down ramps.

Pull shovel excavator is suitable for excavating soil. This is below the stop surface. When it works, it uses inertial force. This is to throw out the bucket and dig far away. Excavation radius and depth are large. The resilience and accuracy are not as good as the backhoe excavators. It is suitable for digging large and deep foundation pits or underwater excavation.

Grasp shovel excavator is more suitable for excavating soil below the stop surface. It is used to excavate foundation pits and open caisson in soft soil area. This kind of excavator is suitable for digging deep and narrow foundation pits. We can divide the excavation methods of grab shovel excavators into trench side and positioning excavation. If the grab bucket is made into a grid shape, we can use it to load ore blocks, wood chips, wood, etc. This is in the wood storage yard.

This is the introduction to the size and sorting of excavators.
