Bublcam 360-degree video camera smashes Kickstarter target in 12 hours

by Robert Mullins

Bublcam, a 360-degree camera with no blind spots, has just become the latest in a long line of Kickstarter success stories. Launching on the crowd funding website yesterday, it reached its $100,000 CAD goal in less than twelve hours.

360-degree cameras like the Ricoh Theta are great for capturing the moment, but leave blind spots. With four cameras arranged in a tetrahedral layout, the baseball-sized Bublcam can see everything without leaving any gaps in your images.

Bublcam can capture 14-megapixel spherical photos, record 1080p Full HD video at 15fps or 720p video at 30fps, and stream live 360-degree video over the web using its built-in Wi-Fi connection. It has a microSD card slot to save your photos on the fly, or you'll be able to upload directly to Dropbox or Google Drive.

Bubl plans to release software for PC, iOS and Android so anyone will be able to pan around their photos and videos, much like how Google Street View works now.

Now that the initial funding goal has been reached, Kickstarter backers that pledged at least $399 CAD should receive the first Bublcam units in May next year. The company is now planning ahead for a retail launch, as well as working on Leap Motion and Oculus Rift support for the future.
